WS 3: ON MODELLING GROWTH 

LEARNING THROUGH THE COMPLEXITY AND SIMPLICITY OF FORM AND MATTER 

 

In this workshop we will investigate growth through explorations with physical elements, two very basic entities, an infinite line and a discrete bond. Going from simple to complex, shifting the linear entity into a spatial structure that exhibits the following characteristics of growth: bonds, voids, and how density grows over time. 

Developing a design perspective on how geometry can be manipulated at the local and global scale to generate growing patterns and structures, creating a constant feedback between the physical models and the analogue parameters through an iterative and recursive process. 

The aim is to construct individual understanding through collective learning of the complexity and simplicity in form and matter. RELEVANCE / This workshop exposes and unfolds growth factors using modelling techniques, frequently found in design practices. It will follow an empirical design research, articulating the findings through operative and open models, questioning traditional boundaries of knowledge production and transfer through design methodology.

OUTPUT
Participants will create a model based in their individual exploration, and a collective installation by building a large scale model.

 

TARGET AUDIENCE
This workshop is open to any applicant interested in sharing their disciplinary perspective on modeling processes, while building an interdisciplinary work environment.

DAY 1 :

 

9h - 11h :Present the topic: Growth - becoming through: Bonds, Voids, Density and Time
Find common definition - Through Sharing / Exercise / Group discussion
11h - 13h : Introduction to the material’s properties and expression, How the bond is constructed
13h - 14h : Lunch
14h - 17h : Empirical material exploration. Behaviour, resilience, forces applied and implied
16h -17h: Individual models using the building-BONDS
17h - 19h : Round up / projecting the scale up

 

DAY 2 :

 

9h - 10:30h: Roundtable - Set team objective for the large structural project
10:30h - 13h : Establishing analogue parametric variables. Setting up. Assembling bonds
